For over two months, 74 year old Zhao Agong has been feeling bloating and pain in his left upper abdomen, unable to eat, and even nausea and vomiting. Within a month, his weight plummeted by over 10 pounds. This made Zhao Agong and his family deeply uneasy, so they came to the Taizhou campus of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital.

After a detailed CT examination, the doctor found a huge space occupying lesion in Zhao Agong’s hepatogastric space, invading the gastric wall and growing into the cavity. This is an extremely unfavorable signal, indicating that Zhao Agong’s condition may be quite serious.

After thoroughly understanding Zhao Agong’s condition, Chief Physician Ying Rongbiao of Taizhou Cancer Hospital immediately organized a multidisciplinary MDT discussion. Faced with such a huge tumor, experts unanimously decided to perform a combined thoracoabdominal surgery for Zhao Agong to remove the affected area after discussion.

This surgery lasted for a whole day, from 9am to 4pm. The surgery involved multiple teams including gastroenterology and thoracic surgery. The tumor invaded multiple parts of the esophagus, stomach, liver, diaphragm, and pericardium. With the tacit cooperation of the team, the tumor was successfully removed. The tumor was approximately the size of a unicorn melon and weighed nearly 4 pounds!

What is MDT?

The full name of MDT is Multi Disciplinary Treatment, which means multidisciplinary joint consultation. Multidisciplinary joint consultation has the natural attribute of breaking down specialized barriers, promoting the development of interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring that patients can obtain more accurate and rational treatment and higher quality medical services through the multidisciplinary joint consultation platform.

Since 2006, the Taizhou campus of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital has been carrying out MDT work for gastrointestinal tumors. After years of practice and experience accumulation, the MDT team for gastrointestinal tumors was officially established in 2017. The team is composed of more than ten professional experts, including gastroenterology, oncology, radiotherapy, hepatobiliary surgery, pathology, imaging, ultrasound medicine, nutrition, clinical pharmacy, and psychology.

Recently, under the leadership of Chief Physician Ying Rongbiao, the gastrointestinal MDT team at Taizhou Hospital won the third prize in the final of the Cancer MDT Elite Competition at the West Lake Cup on a Peak Journey.
