Recently, a team of joint surgery experts from Peking University Third Hospital once again visited Yan’an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (Yan’an Branch of Peking University Third Hospital) to carry out high difficulty and complex unilateral total knee joint surface replacement surgery and unilateral total hip joint replacement surgery for the fifth batch of patients under the "Spring Rain Action".

Case Review

Aunt Zhang has been troubled by pain in the left knee joint for several years. After conservative treatment such as medication and acupuncture and moxibustion, the symptoms have slightly alleviated, but they recur repeatedly. Recently, the pain in the left knee joint has been unbearable, deformity, and limited movement; Aunt Liu, who was also troubled by the disease, was diagnosed with ischemic necrosis of the right femoral head for many years. Her hip joint pain symptoms did not improve significantly, and she suffered from binocular traumatic blindness, which seriously affected her quality of life. It was heard that Yan’an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital was carrying out the "Spring Rain Action - Bone and Joint Replacement Surgery Assistance Public Welfare Campaign". Accompanied by her family, she coincidentally went to the orthopedic outpatient clinic to seek medical treatment, complete the examination, and evaluate the condition, and signed up to participate in the fifth batch of "Spring Rain Action" public welfare activities.

After admission, Jiang Yu, the resident expert and orthopedic director of Peking University Third Hospital, organized a discussion among the departments and invited a team of joint surgery experts from Peking University Third Hospital for remote consultation. Based on imaging data and excluding surgical contraindications, a detailed and meticulous surgical treatment plan was designed for them.

After the preoperative preparation was completed, Director Zhao Minwei, a joint surgery expert from Peking University Third Hospital, came to Yan’an to perform left side artificial total knee joint surface replacement and right side artificial total hip joint replacement for two patients. During the surgery, they overcame many difficulties caused by osteoporosis, limb stiffness, deformities, peripheral muscle atrophy, significant collapse of the femoral head, and severe shortening of the affected limb, such as intraoperative osteotomy, correction of lower limb force lines, and placement of prostheses, and successfully implanted biomimetic artificial prostheses for them.

Total knee arthroplasty is a surgical method that involves removing damaged parts of the knee joint and replacing them with simulated artificial joints. With the continuous deepening of biomechanical research on the knee joint, the design concept of knee prosthesis is constantly updated, and artificial knee arthroplasty is becoming increasingly mature. Currently, artificial total knee arthroplasty is considered one of the surgical methods for treating end-stage or severe knee degenerative diseases.

Artificial total hip arthroplasty is a mature treatment method that involves fixing an artificial prosthesis, including the femur and acetabulum, onto a normal bone to replace the diseased joint and reconstruct the normal function of the patient’s hip joint.

The functions of artificial knee replacement surgery include:

1. Joint pain completely disappears or significantly alleviates. Due to the disappearance of knee joint pain, more movement can be achieved, thereby strengthening leg muscle strength;

1. Relieve pain. Relieve pain caused by various reasons, such as avascular necrosis of the femoral head, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, etc;

2. Stabilize the joints. Stable joint instability caused by various reasons. Such as severe joint flexion deformity, dislocation combined with osteoarthritis, etc;

3. Correct deformities. Correcting joint deformities while undergoing artificial joint surgery to correct and improve existing deformities;

4. Improve joint function. Greatly improve the mobility of previously stiff and restricted joints.
