A trade brochure of the Indian Arthroscopy Society conference slated for October shows how live surgical demos are offered at medical seminars to sponsors, who are divided into different categories.

 

The platinum sponsor, who has to shell out Rs 65 lakh, will get “two-three live surgeries for demo of company product” and three product workshops among other things.

 

 

The gold sponsorship worth Rs 45 lakh gets two product workshops and one surgical demonstration while the silver sponsor paying Rs 25 lakh has to choose between a surgical demo and a product workshop.

 

Doctors’ associations make crores from these conferences in which patients, mostly poor, are made subjects of live demonstrations in the name of medical training.

This is despite senior doctors across the world and in India agreeing that such live ’shows’ increase risk to the patient and that video recorded surgeries are more effective as a teaching tool.

 

Many have surgeons from abroad doing these live shows. Their Indian counterparts provide the patients. In 2015, the MCI had revealed that every year about 1,000 doctors from abroad are given temporary permission to do procedures/surgery/treatment in India.
